The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) recently arrested Shehzad Wahab, a trader from Moradabad suspected of spying for Pakistan and engaging in cross-border smuggling activities. According to ATS officials, Wahab maintained direct contact with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and was involved in providing sensitive information related to India’s internal security. This arrest highlights ongoing threats posed by espionage and illegal trade along the India-Pakistan border, revealing the sophisticated methods used by hostile elements to undermine national security.

Shehzad Wahab, a resident of Rampur district, has been under ATS surveillance for several months after credible intelligence reports indicated his involvement in smuggling and espionage. He reportedly traveled frequently to Pakistan over the years, using his trips to transport various goods such as cosmetics, spices, and clothing across the border illegally. These activities were not limited to trade alone; Wahab allegedly shared classified information with ISI operatives, facilitating their efforts to infiltrate India’s security apparatus. His dual role as a smuggler and spy posed a significant risk to the region’s safety and stability.

The ATS investigation further uncovered that Wahab was instrumental in recruiting individuals from Rampur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh. These recruits were allegedly sent to Pakistan under the guise of seeking employment or smuggling assistance but were, in reality, trained and deployed for espionage activities. Pakistani intelligence reportedly facilitated these movements by arranging visas and travel documents, showing a well-organized effort to strengthen their network within India. Wahab’s role as a recruiter and coordinator reflects the depth of ISI’s covert operations inside Indian territory.

Another disturbing aspect of Wahab’s activities was his involvement in supplying Indian SIM cards to ISI agents operating within the country. This facilitated clandestine communication crucial for espionage and coordination of illegal operations. Furthermore, Wahab allegedly helped in facilitating financial transactions to support ISI-linked individuals inside India. These findings demonstrate the multifaceted approach used by espionage networks, combining information gathering, communication, recruitment, and financial support to achieve their objectives.

Following the arrest, the Uttar Pradesh ATS registered a formal FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that includes charges related to espionage and threats to national security. Wahab was produced before a competent court, and legal proceedings are underway. This arrest sends a strong message about the vigilance and effectiveness of India’s security agencies in countering espionage and protecting the nation from external threats.
