14 Close to Masood Azhar Killed in Indian Strikes: Inside the Fallout of Operation Sindoor

On April 22, 2025, India was shaken by the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent lives, including tourists and civilians, with several others critically injured. The attack was traced back to Pakistan-backed terrorist outfits operating in PoK and Pakistan, triggering a strong response from New Delhi. In a coordinated tri-service military retaliation named ‘Operation Sindoor’, India struck deep into terrorist camps responsible for the carnage. The operation symbolized not just retribution but a message of zero tolerance toward terror infrastructure across the border.

Masood Azhar’s Family Among the Dead in Bahawalpur Strike

According to BBC Urdu, one of the most significant casualties reported came from the Subhan Allah complex in Bahawalpur, a known hub of the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). Masood Azhar, JeM’s chief, confirmed that 10 members of his family — including his elder sister, her husband, a nephew, his niece, and five children — along with four close aides, were killed during the Indian precision strike. The Subhan Allah complex, also referred to as the Usman-o-Ali campus, is a known centre for recruitment and indoctrination by JeM, and was left in ruins after the airstrike.

The Targets: Terror Havens in Bahawalpur and Muridke

Operation Sindoor’s primary targets included nine terror camps, with strikes carried out at strategic facilities in Bahawalpur and Muridke, both hotbeds of Jaish and Lashkar activity. In Muridke, Indian forces targeted Masjid wa Markaz Taiba, the operational base of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Initial intelligence suggests 30 terrorists were killed at each of the two key locations, with the total number of eliminated operatives estimated to be between 70 and 80. The entire operation lasted just 25 minutes, but its strategic precision sent shockwaves through Pakistan’s militant network.

Civilian Displacement and Escalation at the Border

The military retaliation also triggered heavy shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) by Pakistani forces. Reports indicate that 10 civilians have been killed and 33 injured in the border areas amid the rising tension. Indian authorities, led by Home Minister Amit Shah, have initiated emergency evacuations, prioritizing the safety of residents in vulnerable districts. While India’s Ministry of Defence stressed that only terror infrastructure was targeted, the risk of further escalation remains high as the international community urges restraint on both sides.

A Crippling Blow to JeM: Strategic and Symbolic

The loss of Masood Azhar’s family and key operatives in the strike has dealt a crippling blow to JeM, both operationally and psychologically. Beyond eliminating several high-value targets, the destruction of recruitment centers and training camps strikes at the heart of the organization’s structure. Indian officials have called this a non-escalatory, precision-driven response, carefully avoiding Pakistani military installations while ensuring a loud and clear message is delivered: India will not hesitate to neutralize terror at its roots. Operation Sindoor has now become a defining moment in India’s modern counter-terror policy.
